AN ACT TO AMEND CHAPTER 842, LOCAL AND PRIVATE LAWS OF 1991, TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF THE ADDITIONAL COURT COSTS THAT THE CITY OF MERIDIAN MAY LEVY FOR EACH CHARGE THAT RESULTS IN A CONVICTION IN MUNICIPAL COURT; TO PERMIT RATHER THAN REQUIRE THAT THE FUNDS COLLECTED PURSUANT TO SUCH LEVY BE DONATED TO PRIVATE, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. Chapter 842, Local and Private Law of 1991, is amended as follows:
Section 1. (1) The governing authorities of the City of Meridian, Mississippi, are hereby authorized, in their discretion, by resolution duly adopted and entered on their minutes, to levy additional court costs not exceeding Two Dollars ($2.00) per charge in municipal court resulting in conviction for the support of crime prevention, drug education and apprehension of criminals.
(2) The additional funds may be donated to private, nonprofit organizations, such as Crime Stoppers of Lauderdale County.
Section 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
